Sacramento authorities are examining a shooting that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park at the moment deputies were shutting down a large unauthorized gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first called to the park on Howe Avenue at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after receiving reports of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in concerning a potential altercation occurring inside the park.
Aerial units flew over the park but reported no active disturbance. Even so, authorities discovered that several hundred individuals had come together at the location without authorization.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Officers moved to clear the area by forming a perimeter and announcing over their public address systems commanding attendees to disperse at once. About 15 minutes were spent for the gathering to break up.
Just as the crowd began to move that between 20 and 25 rounds rang out. The barrage of gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers quickly moved to searching for victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
Altogether, four victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — made up of one woman and three men each apparently in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical personnel confirmed that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. In a positive development, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento fire crews were called to the scene and helped care for the injured prior to hospital transport.
What Investigators Found
The main crime scene was confirmed to have unfolded near the Cottage Way corridor close to the Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives located additional spent rounds on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet damage were observed in the iron fence near the Home Depot store. This evidence indicated that a Howe Community Park shooting 2026 second shooter had been aiming south from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was placed on lockdown for a period of time. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives stayed at the location for hours.
Suspect Information
Reports confirmed through law enforcement radio communications established that a Kia connected to the shooting was pulled over in Solano County California. Four suspects were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two shooters had been involved.
